Palinuro

On the thin fogs of the long summery calm or on the stormy sea of the winter days, Capo Palinuro spreads itself, like a challenge against the time that seems to stop itself due to a sorcery of the enchanting nature.Palinuro

The green spot of the pine trees breaks down on the smooth coastline, streaked white and red, that falls at precipice on the water. While you are watching the coastline you can see coves, boarders of beach, and isolate bluffs.
Suggestion of colors and endless echoes in the natural caves (approximately 50) over and submarine: the sea has made millenarians and intriguers games with the rocky coast.Il centro abitato è situato sul pendio tra gli uliveti e il mare.

The inhabited center is situated on the slope between olive trees and sea. The hinterland is a limestone dorsal, covered by woods of trees "Aleppo" and "Lentisco".

Truth and legend are melted in the this very handsome earth: Ulisse is stopped here to listen the mermaid's song and Virgilio told about Palinuro that fell in the sea because he was put to sleep bythe stars, shining in the nighttime sky. The name Palinuro, derives from one of these two theories:

  1. "Palin" and "ouros" that means "again" and "wind" (from greek), referred to "Capo Spartivento", a very windy place in Palinuro.
  2.  With more scientific realism, the name derives from the Sanskrit word "palasve" meaning "the red and wild earth".

Palinuro Here have lived in sequence, prehistoric folks, italics and finally Greeks, as the archaeological diggings carried out on the hill of San Paolo give evidence.

The chief town is Centola. Here is very interesting the historical center with churches and palaces of 1100. The other fractions are S. Nicola, Foria and S. Severino.

The last one is constituted from two inhabitated areas: one is recent and modern, the other of medieval age, for a long time deserted, sits on a rock spur, natural bulwark on the below throats of "Mingardo" river.
